Raw Food Diet – Superior Health and Weight Loss

This diet goes by several different names.  It is sometimes called the Raw Vegan Diet or Living Foods Diet.  No matter what you call it, the foods you eat are the same.  Raw Vegans eat foods that have not been processed or heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius).  It is thought that foods that are cooked above this temperature are harmful to the body because they lose their enzymes, and with them, a significant amount of their nutritional value.   Uncooked foods provide the body with living enzymes and proper nutrition.

People follow the Raw Food Diet for different reasons.  Many people are looking to lose weight, but find there are other benefits to it as well.  They report to have more energy, clear skin, and improvement with their digestion and overall health.  Not everyone follows a strict raw foods only diet.  Many people choose to follow a 90 percent, or even 75 percent, raw food diet.  This allows for a little more flexibility in food choices.  As this diet gains popularity, raw food restaurants are seen opening in large cities across the country.

We are all familiar with eating raw vegetables and fruits, but these are not the only foods available to people following the Raw Food Diet.  Sprouts, roots, and root vegetables fall under the category of raw foods when they are prepared according to the dictates of the diet.  Seaweed is also allowed.  Fresh herbs and spices add flavor to raw food recipes. Nuts and seeds are good sources of protein, and many people following a raw food diet will eat nut butters that have undergone minimal processing and not been heated about 115 degrees.

Your food choices are not as restricted as you might think when you begin a Raw Food Diet.  With a little bit of preparation, you can enjoy raw muesli with homemade raw nut yogurt for breakfast, or a bowl of raw apple cinnamon oatmeal.  For breakfast on the go, you could grab a raw trail mix or raw foods granola made with buckwheat and goji berries.  Smoothies made with fresh fruit and vegetables are always a cool and easy option.  Try herbal tea or spiced Indian chai as a substitute for your morning coffee.

Try some pomegranate and avocado guacamole, or raw food hummus with zucchini, and raw food crackers for lunch or a mid-day snack.  The Internet is full of recipe ideas for raw meals, full meal plans for holiday feasts.  With a little planning and preparation, eating raw foods can be an enjoyable part of your holiday festivities.

Eating raw foods does not have to be expensive.  You can keep track of sales and plan your menu around what specials are going on in the produce section of your favorite store.  Prepackaged raw foods can be pricey, but so are non-raw foods that are prepared in advance.  With a blender and a food processor, you can create a multitude of delicious dishes in your own kitchen with a very small time commitment.  A juicer and a food dehydrator will add to your recipe selection.
